From an Idea to a Worldwide Product: A Manufacturing Partnership That Has Lasted Over 30 Years

More than 30 years ago, a small business owner approached Cuddeback Machining with an idea.  He wanted to develop a tamper-evident key ring that could be securely closed without welding, unlike traditional security key rings commonly used in correctional facilities.
The idea was straightforward, but turning it into a product that could be manufactured and sold took time, experimentation, and a lot of collaboration.

Turning an Idea Into a Working Product

We spent much of that first summer working together to develop the original ring.  One of the biggest challenges was figuring out how the ends of the ring would come together and create a secure closure without welding.  We experimented with different designs for the ends of the rings while also developing the first closing and crimping tools.  It wasn’t enough to make a ring that worked. We needed to develop a complete system that customers could use to close and secure the rings themselves.  Through experimentation, adjustments, and testing, we eventually developed a working system that the customer could take to market.  But that was only the beginning.

Continuing to Improve the Design

Even after the first successful product was developed, the work continued.  Over the next several years, we worked closely with the customer to refine the design, particularly the ends of the rings where they joined together.  Those improvements helped turn the original concept into an established product line.  What began as a single ring eventually expanded into five different sizes, along with the closing and crimping tools needed to use them.

More Than 30 Years Later

Today, Cuddeback Machining continues to manufacture all five sizes of these tamper-evident rings, along with the tools used to close and crimp them.  The rings are now sold around the world.  What began as an idea from a small business has grown into a product line that has been manufactured for more than three decades.  And through all those years, the manufacturing relationship has continued.

The Value of Working Together

Looking back, what makes this project special isn’t just the success of the product. It’s the relationship that developed along the way.  The customer brought the original idea and vision for the product. Cuddeback Machining brought its manufacturing and tooling experience to help develop a practical solution.  Together, we worked through the challenges, developed the initial product and tools, continued making improvements, and expanded the product line.  It’s a good example of how a manufacturing partnership can extend well beyond simply making parts from a drawing.  Sometimes it starts with an idea, a conversation, and a willingness to work through the challenges together.  More than 30 years later, we’re still proud to be part of that story.  Cuddeback Machining, Inc. is a second-generation, family-owned manufacturer located in Hilton, NY, with the third generation actively involved in the business. We specialize in CNC machining, tool and die, wire forming, stamping, and custom manufacturing solutions.
